Our Herstory
The Project Beauty Experience initiative was envisioned by The Silver Sisters in the NYCHA Dyckman Houses. It was born from a desire to be of service and remind others beauty exists everywhere - even in impoverished neighborhoods.
When they noticed many young ladies from their neighborhood needing more positive role models and life guidance - The Silver Sisters understood the assignment.
Because of the values instilled during their upbringing, they understood it to be their duty to give back to their community. They took inventory of their skill sets. Their ability to assemble and develop teams, communicate effective with stakeholders from different walks of life, design and implement programming, manage projects and logistics, practice grit and resourcefulness, and the leadership skills necessary to bring a vision to fruition.
In order to launch the first pilot program, The Silver Sisters organized and obtained the support of their elected officials (Borough President, City Council, State Senate), business owners (GAP Factory Store, NY State Latino Restaurant Association members), local institutions (Columbia University, Dominican Consulate General, United Palace Theater, WAHI Chamber of Commerce).
The founders also recruited the professional services of volunteers and implemented a pilot program which ten years later has served hundreds of people and evolved into an array of wrap-around services for young ladies and their families.
